When urea is surface broadcasted in floodwater, it dissolves easily and the nitrogen quickly gets out of reach of the rice plants. Simply put, about two out of every three bags of urea broadcast in this way are not available to the crop. Urea deep placement helps to reduce this nutrient loss.
